WRIST ICONS brings you the German icon of the nineties. But in this case one of the first limited editions from A.Lange & Söhne, the Blue Italia edition. The watch comes as full set and has been sold at Orologeria Pisa in Milan in January 2010.

The history of A.Lange & Söhne

Lange & Söhne was founded by Walter Lange his great grand father Ferdinand Adolph Lange inn Glashütte, Germany in 1845. The original A. Lange & Söhne was nationalized and ceased to exist in 1948, following the occupation by the Soviet Union after World War II.

On December 7, 1990, shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall and reunification of Germany, Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein, a watch industry executive, restored the company as Lange Uhren GmbH, with the assistance of several Swiss watch manufacturers, including IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Lange and Blümlein knew each other from Jaeger Le-Coultre and IWC; both brands that they also worked successfully together and helped flourishing again.

A.Lange & Söhne was re-established on the exact date 145 years after Walter's great-grandfather Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded the original company. The new company re-registered A. Lange & Söhne as its trademark, and was again based in Glashütte. It presented its first range of wristwatches in 1994.

Since 2000, A. Lange & Söhne has been a member of the Richemont group, and only manufactured around five thousand watches every year. In 2017, Walter Lange died at age 92

The Lange 1

On 24 October 1994, at the Dresden Royal Palace, Günter Blümlein, Walter Lange and Hartmut Knothe unveiled the inaugural collection of the new A. Lange & Söhne manufacture, consisting of the classic Saxonia, the rectangular Arkade, the über-complex Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite” and, of course, the Lange 1.

This watch would become an icon as well as the big saviour of the German watchmaking tradition.

Why did this watch become such an iconic piece? It is due to a couple of reasons. First it was a watch that was really well made. It had a German kind of styled caliber with beautifully finished ¾ mainplate in German silver which resembles a lot like old pocket watches from Glashütte. Although the movement looks quite simple, in reality it wasn’t. It had a double mainspring barrel, a power reserve indicator, hacking seconds and a quick-set date.

But this watch became even more iconic because of its looks. This watch had a kind of modern view on a classic dress watch. The movement was housed in a 38.5mm sized case, which was really big at the time. Nowadays many watch collectors prefer this size for a fine handmade wristwatch. But one if its most striking elements was the dial of the Lange 1.

Dial design Lange 1

The Lange 1 has an asymmetrical dial layout with an oversize date. But strangely it looks very balanced. This is because the dial has been designed under the principle of the golden ratio. You can draw a triangle between the middle of both sub dials and the giant date.

Lange 1 dial design follows the rule of thirds. A rule of thumb that suggests when an image or object is divided into nine equal parts by two horizontal and vertical lines, the important elements should sit either on along these lines or their intersections. Employment of this principle what gives the comforting symmetry to Lange 1 while appearing random. The center of each element is positioned across the lines. The hours / minutes dial’s borders are horizontally center to big-date and seconds sub-dial; further solidifying the symmetric look.

The signature element is positioned at 1o’clock.. It sits just on the intersection of the lines (rule of thirds), making it one of the most striking elements on the dial. The window size is arranged by the golden ratio of 1.618. A careful look reveals the immense attention to symmetry. The window’s bottom sit on the same horizontal axis with the applied XII, as does the seconds’ sub-dial sits with the VI at the lower side.

So the dial design is all over very muchjin balance. Now let’s take a brief look at the top and bottom of the Roman numerals from the hour and minute sub-dial. The top of the “XII” falls perfectly in line with the centre of the large date and the bottom of the “VI” aligns with the centre of seconds sub-dial as well. If you combine this with the fact that the centres of the two sub-dials and date window form an isosceles triangle, you end up with a dial that never appears unbalanced.

Caliber L901.0

Cal. L901.0 is one of the original watch movements produced by A. Lange & Söhne in 1994. It is a hand-winding movement with big date and power reserve used in the first Lange 1 models. This movement, more than any other, established the reputation of the new A. Lange & Söhne brand.

Cal. L901.0 features an offset dial for hour and minute hands, shifted towards 9:00, allowing space for a big date at 1:00, power reserve pointer at 3:00, and small seconds at 5:00. This novel dial arrangement has since become a signature of A. Lange & Söhne and is instantly recognizable in the watch industry. The big date complication was designed to resemble that of the Semper Opera House in Dresden, and was the first patent registered by the new company.

As is typical of A. Lange & Söhne watches, and reflective of the history of Glashütte watchmaking, the movement features a single large plate covering most of the gears, commonly called a Glashütte Three-Quarters Plate. To aid assembly, gold chatons provide access to the pivot points for the wheel train. A hand-carved balance cock features a swan neck regulator.

The first generation is characterised by its hand-wound calibre L901.0 with 72h power reserve but an outsize date that isn’t precisely jumping. The movement was based on the JLC 822 calibre, yet of course, only for the gear train calculation, the rest being entirely custom-made for this watch. This first generation was produced from 1994 to the end of 2014 and has been available in multiple editions, including some rare models such as the Darth, the Luminous or the 1A.

Blue Italia limited edition

This 100-example run was released between 2007 and 2009 exclusively to retailers in the Italian market. It is one of the earliest limited editions that A.Lange & Söhne made. The handset and applied indices were finished in blued steel, set off against a stark white dial.

In 2019 A. Lange & Söhne was marking the 25th year since it first unveiled its modern line-up of wristwatches – led by the iconic Lange 1 – in 1994 with a 10-piece set of different special Lange 1 models. These “25th Anniversary” models of the Lange 1 paid tribute to the original design with a standard silver dial. As a recurring theme found in the other commemorative pieces, the dial markings are printed in blue instead of the standard black – including the Roman numerals and hour markers.

The Grand Lange 1 Blue Italia In fact, look very identical to these 25th Anniversary Lange 1 dials, with the exception of the printed indices; the Blue Italia edition had applied markers.

To come one of these Grand Lange 1 Blue Italia across is quite rare especially as a full set!
