WRIST ICONS is proud to present you a really rare full set Cartier Tank Américaine in yellow gold sold in 1999. What I really like is the slender look on the wrist. The Tank Américaine version is quite big with its size of 26.5 x 46mm. Particularly interesting is the cintrée kind of shape of the case with the filigree or guilloché**dial with the rose pattern in combination with the blue hands.

History of the Cartier Tank

When we take a look at the Tank Americaine, we should also look at the history of the Cartier Tank in general. Louis Cartier designed the Tank in 1917, and was inspired by the new Renault tanks which Cartier saw in use on the Western Front. ts lines and proportions are similar to those of tanks found on First World War battlefields; it is both a square and a rectangle, and its strap is seamlessly integrated into vertical sidebars called "brancards".

An Icon was born. The Cartier Tank Louis Cartier, or the LC Tank as collectors and connoisseurs like to refer to it. With its smoother and rounder lines,  it followed the Tank Normale in 1919, and it was the second Tank that Cartier ever launched. It became the jewel in the crown of the entire watch collection of Cartier. So the Tank turned 100 2 years ago! The first prototype was presented as a gift to the American general Pershing, a few years before the watch was put on the market in 1919. The design is inspired by the caterpillars of tanks.

Characteristic of the Tank is that the band starters of this watch are fully integrated in the housing, with the watch band seamlessly merging into the band starters. The design of the rectangular watch and the sleek design make this watch very popular with the unconventional customers. The Tank has certainly retained its distinctive identity over the years.

Nowadays very complicated watches are built with triple tourbillions or triple chronographs. The Tank on the other hand is not a very complicated watch. Its powers lies in its simplicity . While the Tank Louis Cartier with its mechanical or quartz time only caliber, is just a very straight forward, good looking watch. Exclusively build in precious metals (up onto recently..) and always set with a sapphire in the crown, the Tank Louis Cartier is a statement, like no other watch in the collection is. It is not only recognized by the Kings and Queens but also artists like Andy Warhol, Clarke Gable and Duke Ellington were often spotted with a Tank watch.  It is also often the watch of choice by those people who prefer to have only one watch in their lives, they wear the Tank Louis Cartier day in and day out and see their Tank as part of their personality. The Tank Louis Cartier is often seen amongst industry leaders, fashion designers and in general, among people that like to dress stylish and have a certain taste for timeless objects.

History of the tank Américaine

The Tank Américaine was first introduced in 1989 in yellow gold and quickly became a classic. It was inspired by the Tank Cintrée (originally designed in 1921) and its elongated curved rectangular case. This model was specially developed for the American market, hence its name. the case had a more substantial sized case in response of the market asking for bigger sized watches, starting in the late 80s, early 90s. The Tank Américaine was a modern wristwatch with stronger, more masculine dimensions than the Cintrée. A milestone in the evolution of the Tank, the Tank Américaine was the very first curved Tank watch from Cartier to be designed with a water resistant case.

Movement

It features a very slim Cartier movement: caliber 430 MC. This is a really nice manual wind movement  with 18 jewels,  signed CARTIER. Actually it is a Cartier branded version of a movement from Piaget 4caliber 30P, an ultra-thin hand-wound mechanical movement beating at 21,600 beats per hour.

Condition

The Tank Américaine comes with  polished tank case, its case back affixed with four screws and also 4 screws that hold a genuine Cartier black crocodile strap, signed Cartier, with signed solid 18k yellow gold Cartier folding buckle. The Tank Américaine has a yellow goldoctagonal winding crown set with a faceted sapphire cabochon. This classic dress watch is in overall excellent condition and just came back from a full service at the service center of Cartier/Richemont.

** Guilloché (/ɡɪˈloʊʃ/; or guilloche) is a decorative technique in which a very precise, intricate and repetitive pattern is mechanically engraved into an underlying material via engine turning, which uses a machine of the same name, also called a rose engine lathe. This mechanical technique improved on more time-consuming designs achieved by hand and allowed for greater delicacy, precision, and closeness of line, as well as greater speed.
