WRIST ICONS brings you the first version of the automatic Heuer Autavia GMT.
Heuer is known second to Rolex for having some great GMT watches with a Pepsi bezel. We all love the Pepsi scheme consisting of red and blue colours on a GMT watch. What sets this watch apart from all Heuer GMT watches is that this particular reference has the rare 24 hour bezel but more importantly has been the first automatic GMT produced by Heuer and only in very limited numbers. This is the second most sought after Heuer GMT reference and very difficult to find. I have been told by a really seasoned Heuer collector that only 200-300 examples have ever been produced, most likely only 50 still exist and each year only 1 or 2 examples become available to the open market.
In 1969 Heuer, Breitling and Hamilton were the first to bring the automatic chronograph to the market. Heuer enlisted the watchmaker Buren who developed a micro-rotor automatic movement. These were the Chronomatic watches with the Caliber 11. The Caliber 11 movement employed a modular construction, mating Buren’s micro-rotor powered watch movement with a chronograph module developed by Dubois Depraz. Because of the rush to become the first to introduce an automatic chronograph to the market, this groundbreaking Heuer movement needed some improvements shortly after the release and in 1970 the calibre 11i was released fine tuning the movement.
Soon after the launch of the Autavia 1163 in 1969 Heuer followed up with another useful tool watch, the Autavia 1163 GMT. The automatic Calibre 11 movement was modified with a 24 hour GMT module. This was later upgraded to a dedicated GMT movement, the Calibre 14. Early examples have the 1 to 24 rotating bezel and brushed steel hands with red insert. These soon changed to the even number only bezel and red hour and minute hands. All Autavia 1163 GMT have fluted pushers with a recess cut into the top side of the case and crown at the "9" position which is always signed. The lug width is 20mm.
The bezel is a little bit faded on the edges and has some tiny scratches. The matte black dial is in great condition, no big marks on it, only some tiny little spots. The white registers have a nice ivory beige kind of patina. The lume on the hour markers and hands show a very consistent kind of aging and don’t have any kind of loss of luminescent material. The GMT hand has some spots at the base. All of this watch shows a very consistent look as an example of the originality of this watch. The tonneau-shaped stainless steel case is in a condition vintage collectors are looking for: never polished with natural signs of wear. The serial number is still very clearly visible.
As with all of our pre-owned watches this watch comes with a full 12 month WRIST ICONS warranty that will be invoked from the day of purchase. Please check our website to have a look at the high resolution pictures on a macro level. You will see every detail at its best.
