Girard-Perregaux Super Compressor Diver Gyromatic

WRIST ICONS presents the Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic - vintage super compressor diver. This is rather extravagant 70s diver with an oversized 44mm case with a rotating bezel and beautiful partly mirror sector dial.

What is a super compressor case?

This watch is an is an EPSA product. Don't know what EPSA is? Well if you like vintage you should; they are responsible for all Super-Compressor cases and made some of the most famous vintage sports watches of all time The term “Super Compressor” is one that is quite often misused these days. Most people associate Super Compressor (SC) with any watch that has dual crowns and an internal rotating bezel, but it’s not that simple. Super Compressor is a trademarked name for specific case designs made by the case manufacturer Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA). They designed a patented case sealing method that actually became more water tight the deeper the watch went. The deeper you went, the more pressure was applied to the case-back, pressing it against the O-ring gasket. Source wornandwound

Movement

This GP has a higher grade movement than went into most EPSA pieces and is just generally a rare watch and rare to find. In this watch houses caliber 441.296 which is a high frequency movement ticking at 36.000 beats per hour.  It has a calendar function and a very interesting hacking function, meaning that if you want to set the time, when you pull out the crown at 4 o’clock the second hand will stop moving. This will make you able to set the time on the second..

“In 1957, the watchmakers of the Manufacture introduced the Gyromatic, an ultra-thin high-performance automatic winding system enabling the production of remarkably thin watches.

This principle reached its peak in 1965 in equipping the world’s first ever high-frequency mechanical self-winding movement, the Gyromatic HF, beating at a rate of 36,000 vibrations per hour. “
