WRIST ICONS brings you a future icon. This year’s price winner of the mens category from the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève. This watch features a brand new serial-produced escapement (!) and a gorgeous dial inspired by bark on white birch trees in Japan. This Grand Seiko will be the watch that make the Swiss step up their GAME.
The dial is inspired by the "Shirakaba" or white birch tree forests that thrive in northern parts of Japan, and that grow in profusion near the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi where this and all Grand Seiko mechanical watches are made.
The design is true to the Grand Seiko Style defined back in 1967 with the celebrated 44GS, but its heritage is combined with a contemporary feel that points towards a new era.
The watch is incredible well made, you just have to see it in the metal cause it then gives you the full 3D experience so that you appreciate the play of light on the dial and the case and bezel with their zaratsu polished surfaces. This polishing technique makes it possible that flat surfaces are polished to a distortion-free, brilliant mirrored finish. It takes years and years to acquire these polishing skills. The craftsperson holds and moves the surface to be polished in front, rather than at the side, of a rotating metal disc that has sandpaper attached to it. This way of polishing is much more difficult process but it makes the surface of the metal extraordinarily smooth.
The movement has like the Japanese version of a coaxial escapement or like Rolex their chronergy and parachrom solution. It’s a dual impulse escapement solution. The movement architecture is really gorgeous and the finishing too. Their movements used to be robust and OK but this is really their pivotal step into haute horology which they use to compete big time with the Swiss.
The watch is powered by the Hi-beat Caliber 9SA5, which has a precision rate of +5 to -3 seconds a day and achieves a long power reserve of 80 hours.
The precision, power and slimness of Caliber 9SA5 are the result of the radical re-design of key structures including the entirely new escapement and free-sprung balance developed in-house.
Caliber 9SA5 will be the foundation upon which a whole new generation of Grand Seiko mechanical watches will be created in the future.
