The Submariner model was introduced in 1953 as a proper toolwatch and a golden version is indeed capable of diving but more of luxury item.  Rolex toolwatches were made out of steel (Oystersteel) for durability while gold is less resistant to scratches. Submariners were initially water-resistant up to 100m (330 feet for refrence 6204)  and had a rotating bezel for underwater timing with simple, functional design. In short: a tool watch, made for action and durability.

Rolex also produces Submariners in yellow or white gold, sometimes with gold and blue or green combinations. The problem of a golden submariner is its strangeness”. Gold is soft and prone to scratches. A diving watch made of 18k gold is less suitable for rough use.
